Foam

Foamed-In-Place Polyurethane

U.S. Cooler’s® foamed-in-place polyurethane performance rating of R-32 for freezers meets the Energy Independence and Security Act and exceeds the R-25 requirement for coolers. Its 97% closed-cell structure resists moisture from seeping into the insulation, which helps maintain the high R-value. By utilizing state-of-the-art horizontal presses and technology, panels lie flat during the foaming process, which reduces voids in the insulation. With the panels’ structural tongue and groove, the cam-locking system provides an air-tight seal between the panels and restricts air infiltration into the insulation core. Foamed-in-place polyurethane manufacturing techniques present a uniform adhesion to the metal skins causing the insulation to continuously adhere.

Superior Quality

U.S. Cooler’s® polyurethane walk-in products are made with the same exceptional quality and performance construction that has proven successful in the industry for over 25 years. Every walk-in is pre-assembled in our manufacturing facility before shipment to ensure precise quality control and ease of assembly in the field.

Design Flexibility

U.S. Cooler’s® walk-in cooler and freezer units are constructed to the customer’s specific needs. Each panel is engineered to provide durable, long-lasting service. The panels can be assembled quickly and easily. With our cam-action locking system, our units can be taken down for relocation or expanded as simply as they are installed. U.S. Cooler® offers several interior and exterior metal options to conform to your design requirements for decor and durability.

General

Walk-ins are constructed of 100% foamed-in-place polyurethane modular panels designed for accurate, rapid field assembly. All walk-ins are test assembled at the factory and include a set of installation instructions and a layout drawing. Each panel will have an identification number corresponding to the layout drawing to facilitate rapid and accurate field erection.

Coolers & Freezers

Foamed-in-place Polyurethane: All insulation shall be 4″ thick, high quality, rigid polyurethane, 2.2 lb density. For Coolers: K factor of not more than .141 and an R-factor of not less than 7 .1 per inch, initial fresh R-28.4 minimum total wall R factor. For Freezers: K factor of not more than .125 and an R factor of no less than 8 per inch, initial fresh R-32 minimum total wall R factor. For coolers and freezers, vapor transmission shall be less than 1 perm and foam core material must meet UL Foam Core 20 flame spread rating with an average smoke rating of less than 450. (ASTM E- 84) UL 1715 Certified listed with Intertek/ETL (optional)

Panel Construction

Each panel consists of inner and outer metal skins, and a 4″ insulation core, and is equipped with cam-action locking devices. Construction is approved by the National Sanitation Foundation International and bears the NSF® Seal of Approval. All panels shall be connected to one another by placing the tongue of the insulation core of one panel into the groove of the core insulation of the adjacent panel. The resultant tongue and groove joint shall be sealed at both sides by double-barreled NSF® approved gaskets. To avoid future swelling and mold formation, no wood shall be permitted in the manufacture of the tongue and groove panel profile.

Extruded Insulation

Extruded Polystyrene insulation is one of the two main insulation materials used in the manufacturing process for walk-in coolers and freezers. Extruded polystyrene insulation is a closed-cell insulation structure with resistance to moisture absorption. These characteristics, along with its strength, are what make Extruded Polystyrene the optimal choice for the cold storage industry.

Maintains a High R-Value

Extruded Polystyrene’s closed-cell structure and lack of voids result in a higher, longer-lasting R-value. Extruded Polystyrene holds its R-value longer than other insulations. While other insulations only retain 25% of their R-value within 5 years, Extruded Polystyrene retains 75% of its R-value over 5 years.

Improves Energy Efficiency

The continual objective of the insulation in walk-ins is to maintain a high R-value which ultimately saves energy. Obtaining and maintaining the highest possible R-value is the key to achieving the highest energy efficiency over the life of the unit. Extruded Polystyrene meets and exceeds the requirements for the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and upcoming federal regulations.

Excellent Moisture Resistance

One of the largest factors that can affect the insulation’s performance is moisture. When water starts collecting inside walk-in insulation, the R-value drops, and moisture inside the insulation starts to freeze. When there are extreme environmental differences in the temperature of the inside and the outside of the walk-in, the insulation is vulnerable to retaining moisture in the structural voids. As water has a much lower R-value than insulation, the water reduces the R-value of the insulation. As the R-value decreases, the unit’s refrigeration system has to work even harder to hold the correct interior temperatures.

Coolers & Freezers

All wall and ceiling insulation are 4″ thick, high quality, rigid extruded polystyrene, 1.6 lb density. For coolers, the R-factor will be at least 7 .2 per inch, making the R-value of the panels equal to or greater than R-28.8. For freezers, the R-factor will be at least 8 per inch, making the R-value equal to or greater than R-32. Vapor transmission shall be less than 1 perm, and foam core material must meet: Owens Corning – UL Foam Core 5 flame spread rating with an average smoke rating of less than 175. (UL 723) Dow – UL Foam Core 15 flame spread rating with an average smoke rating of less than 165. (UL 723)

Vert-Ergo® Handle

The Vert-Ergo® handle is the industry’s first vertically positioned walk-in cooler or freezer handle.  It’s simple in design.  The vertical handle design places your hand further from the hinges, which in turn, makes a substantial decrease in the effort required to open the door. Our new Vert-Ergo® handle is built to exact standards with a quality you can see and feel.  It is available with an externally mounted lock or optionally as a standalone handle.  It is reversible and can be mounted on either a right-hand or left-hand opening door.

Testimonials

Why I buy U.S. Cooler®.  I have seen how the panels and units are built, and I feel they are among the best in the industry.  The insulation product and metal skins are of high quality.  The panels fit well in the field due to the pre-construction U. S. Cooler® performs in their plant. Customer service has been there when I have had any questions or when dealing with the few issues I have had over the years. I believe in the product and the people I have had the pleasure of working with at U. S. Cooler®. I have to mention Sharon Martz and Sarah Barry, as they have been very instrumental in my learning process and success in selling walk-in units over the last 8 years. Both have always been very prompt with quotes and helping me with any questions I may have.
